Your funny and interesting story about a spaceship wandering interstellar space and finding the remnants of a Voyager probe reminds me of another funny story. In 1974 I attended a guest lecture at my college by Carl Sagan. Sagan talked a lot about the Voyagers and space exploration. After the lecture I waited around and had the privilege of speaking briefly with Sagan. My question was about the wisdom of identifying earth’s location on the Golden Record because any alien civilization that was cruising around in interstellar space and detected and recovered Voyager would be vastly superior to us technologically. They might come to Earth and do harm.
Sagan said that wasn’t a concern because the Voyagers would never get farther than something like 10 or 25 light years from Earth. (I don’t recall the exact number he used.) He said TV signals, which travel at light speed, are already past that and those signals would reveal Earth’s location.
I didn’t say it, but if aliens are getting years of I Love Lucy shows etc., they would be very acquainted with our civilizations. That means the Golden Record served no purpose other than being a publicity stunt. Sagan and others traded the resources and payload restriction needed to create the record and mount it on Voyager for the worldwide publicity of creating the record. I don’t disagree, but it is interesting that the way the record was portrayed to the public was inaccurate.

Thanks for the interesting story. I would have loved to have seen or met Carl Sagan. I knew about the radio and TV signals, but haven’t thought about that in a long time. It is also interesting that the Golden Record was used as a publicity stunt, and that makes sense that they would do that.
